PITCH RELATIONSHIP DEMYSTIFIED

For drums with two heads installed, research of Bram Van den Broeck leads to the following relationships between the fundamental tone and the lug pitches of the batter head and the resonant head.



Following estimation methods and formulae are proprietary of Bram Van den Broeck.

They have an accuracy of approx. +/- 10%. The accuracy depends on where a drum is tuned within its comfort zone/tuning range.  

Below methods can be especially useful for the tuning of toms and floor toms.


FUNDAMENTAL TONE ESTIMATOR

1. How to estimate the resulting fundamental tone based upon batter head lug pitch & resonant head lug pitch?

  • Fundamental tone = (Batter Lug Pitch + Reso Lug Pitch) : 3.44

 2. How to estimate the lug pitch required for the resonant head, to tune to a desired fundamental tone with the batter head’s lug pitch tuned to an interval above it?

(= more defined 'attack')

3. How to estimate the lug pitches required for the resonant head & the batter head to reach a desired fundamental tone, with a chosen "pitch interval-relationship" between both heads?

TOM TUNING (SHORT)

 


 

The following sound files explore different tunings of different sized toms. 

These toms were tuned to different fundamental tones in order to explore their tuning range (comfort zone) when both heads were tuned quite far apart.

This tuning explores a custom 'short' sustain setting, aiming for melodic relationships between the tonal spacing of the lug pitches of the batter and the resonant head, and the batter lug pitch and the fundamental tone of the drum.

In this experiment the heads were tuned in a specific way: the batter head lug pitch is tuned a perfect fifth (P5) interval above the fundamental tone of the drum. 

All drums have the same heads for batter heads, and the same heads for resonant heads to rule out the differences.

The 13", and 16" drums have maple shells with 45° sharp bearing edges.

The 12",14" drums have chestnut shells with 60° rounded bearing edges.


Below is shown how the drums are tuned per fundamental tone.
